PROFIBUS is a communication standard widely used in automation technology that enables the transmission of data between different devices and systems in industry. The protocol is a serial standard and offers high transmission speed, interference immunity and flexibility.

PROFIBUS consists of two variants: PROFIBUS DP (Decentralised Periphery) and PROFIBUS PA (Process Automation). PROFIBUS DP is mainly used for communication between sensors and actuators as well as decentralised controllers, while PROFIBUS PA is intended for the transmission of data in process automation. Both variants use a similar data transmission technology based on a master-slave architecture.

In the PROFIBUS DP variant, a central control computer (master) coordinates the communication and sends instructions to the connected devices (slaves). The data is transmitted via an RS-485 or fibre optic line. PROFIBUS PA, on the other hand, uses a special transmission technology based on AS-i (Actuator Sensor Interface). This transmission technology makes it possible to transmit data from field devices such as sensors and actuators in real time and thus to control processes more quickly.

PROFIBUS is characterised by its high reliability and is used worldwide in numerous applications, including factory automation, process automation, building automation, power generation and distribution, as well as in the transport and logistics industry. Due to its flexibility and immunity to interference, PROFIBUS is also suitable for demanding applications in harsh industrial environments.

To ensure smooth communication, PROFIBUS devices and systems must be configured and programmed accordingly. Various configuration and programming tools are available for this purpose, enabling easy commissioning and maintenance. In addition, there are a variety of training courses and certifications to deepen expertise in the use of PROFIBUS.

Overall, PROFIBUS offers a reliable, flexible and robust communication solution for automation technology and has established itself as a standard in the industry.

PROFIBUS is an open and manufacturer-independent technology managed by the PROFIBUS User Organisation (PNO). It is a widely used standard in industrial automation and is supported by many manufacturers.

Schildknecht AG is a leasing member of the PNO and was the first company to transmit PROFIBUS and also later PROFIsafe via radio.
