Machine-to-machine communication

M2M stands for machine-to-machine communication and refers to the automatic exchange of information between “machines” and a central office using the Internet or mobile radio networks. Machines and objects of various kinds communicate directly with each other without human intervention: Network operators have introduced the short term M2M for this purpose.

The term “machine” is generally understood to mean machines, vehicles, containers, vending machines, household appliances and other objects; in all cases it is a matter of linking information and communication technology.

Machine-to-machine communication solutions can rationalize work processes in almost every branch of industry and lead to increases in productivity. In the vending machine industry, for example, vending machines automatically report to a central computer when they need to be reloaded. Regular trips of the vending machine operator and training stands can thus be avoided. The rationalizations associated with such business models and the resulting cost savings hold great market potential for industry and society.

Use of this technology by Schildknecht AG:
Within the extensive Schildknecht radio module series DATAEAGLE (DE), all variants of the DE 7000 device group (e.g. DE 7050) are geared towards collecting data and forwarding it to the Internet. This concerns data from “things or things” such as sensors, which are collected by the radio module in its function as an edge gateway via various technologies (fieldbus, Ethernet, Bluetooth, WLAN, LoRa, IO and others) and sent to the Internet or a cloud using a globally valid eSIM card. This also includes Schildknecht’s own DATAEAGLE device cloud, in which, in addition to a portal for displaying data flows, the administration of the respective DATAEAGLE device also takes place, e.g. through updates.
